Singles Spotlight:
Colin Miller –
“Porchlight”

Hello reader,

Welcome back.

Today, we’re excited to introduce another artist who is making some great music: Colin Miller. He’s another excellent North Carolina artist starting to make a name for himself on a larger stage, sharing his songwriting and musicianship across the country and beyond. His first release, Hideout EP (2020), was followed by My Love in the Winter EP (2020), Hook EP (2021), and his acclaimed full-length debut Haw Creek (2023).

And recently, on April 25th via Mtn Laurel Recording Co, Miller released an outstanding album that served as a wonderful tribute to a good friend. The album titled Losin’ is, according to the album’s press release, “[Miller’s] house and studio was owned by Gary King, who Miller describes as a father figure. As his health began to decline, Miller adopted a caretaker role, which meant going to the main house where Gary lived to give him haircuts, watch NASCAR races, bring groceries, and supervise him as he insisted on smoking cigarettes close to his oxygen tank. On July 8th of 2022, Gary passed away, and his obituary mentions Miller in a long list of family and special friends.”

Miller crafted this album with a supergroup of musicians and sound engineers, enlisting the extraordinary talented producer, recording and mixing engineer, and sound master extraordinaire Alex Farrar at Drop of Sun Studio, Jake Lenderman (MJ Lenderman, Wednesday) to play drums and lead guitar, Xandy Chelmis (MJ Lenderman, Wednesday) to play pedal steel, and Ethan Baechtold (MJ Lenderman, Wednesday) on the bass, keys, and aux percussion.

In SWT’s opinion, one of the best songs on Losin’ is “Porchlight.” That’s the single that we’re going to spotlight today. We’re so stoked to share it with you. It’s a powerful song whose hooks will catch you from the first few notes of the song. The melody is gorgeous, as are the vocals. The song serves well as a part of a whole; an album about grief, a celebration of life shared with your “ride or die” friends that are still with you.
