Sunshine Makers –
“The Love We Give”

How are you today?

I’m excited to talk about a group that is creating wonderful music: London, Ontario’s own Sunshine Makers. According to their bio, “Sunshine is the phenomenon of little things coming together to create something much greater. As our name suggests, Sunshine Makers creates music that radiates with a warm glow. The music resonates with themes of positivity and hope—with love, peace, and unity always at the forefront. With a beautiful bouquet of vocal arrangements and the use of organic instrumentation alongside analog synthesizers, the sonic appeal is an amalgamation of modern and classic vibes with deep roots in R&B, funk, jazz, and neo-soul.”  After listening a bit recently, I agree with both the genre assessment and the band’s intent. Well said. Their music uplifts with its warmth and old-school sound and also creates a sense of community. Which is much appreciated at any time, but especially when some are gung ho on creating division with their fellow humans.

Who’s in the five-person band? On guitar, vocals, and synth: Brent Jackson; on Keys, Vocals, Mellotron: Tina Powell; on Bass: Caleb Brown; on Drums: Thomas Perquin; and on Percussion: Shayn Barnes. They’ve released two albums so far: their self-titled full-length debut album, Sunshine Makers (2024), and The Sun Still Shines (2025), and look for their third album, Turn Up The Sun, soon. No, this is not to be confused with the Oasis song of the same name on their 2005 album Don’t Believe The Truth. Let’s explore the single “The Love We Give” in more depth from the press release for the song: “‘The Love We Give promotes the act of giving to recognize the love we have within ourselves, and to project that love back into the world,’ share Sunshine Makers. “It is a message for us all to hold hope and keep believing in life. Though the world can feel out of control, we must not forget that we have the control within to choose how we wish to be. If we believe that love will prevail, then it will. The song and its message bring us joy. As musicians, we are in an intimate relationship with our listeners. The joy imbued in the songs’ message of reciprocity and our performance is our heartfelt contribution to this relationship.”

Who helped the Sunshine Makers create the song and album? The press release notes, “The single and album were recorded in April 2026 in North Hollywood with producer Sergio Rios (Orgone, Say She She, Neal Francis) at Killion Sound. The band tracked and played live to analog tape to capture their warm vintage sound while also masterfully capturing the energy of the room, which brought the band an incredible amount of joy, as Sergio was the perfect wizard to catch and craft their magic. They used the same recording room, instruments, and gear that were used to record Say She She albums Silver and Cut & Rewind, as well as Neal Francis’ Return to Zero, adding to the band’s warm, vintage sound.”

Before their album Turn Up The Sun officially comes out later this year, what else can you look forward to from the band? “…Every single from the album will have its own video, and once they are all released, they will together create a short film. It serves as an opportunity to showcase each band member and the joy they experience performing for their listeners. Directed by Sean Stanley and Sunshine Makers, each video will promote a message of peace, love, and unity while highlighting a specific band member’s journey to a show, whether that be driving, running, cycling, skateboarding, or otherwise. It’s a fast-moving time-lapse from morning until performance on a rooftop in the downtown core in full sunshine.” We’re looking forward to all of those videos and the resulting short film.

After learning about the band’s sense of community and listening to “The Love We Give,” I knew I had to include it in our Singles Spotlight series. It’s got summery, feel-warm-inside vibes. In the best ways. It’s not just vibes; there’s plenty of truth and substance within the lyrics and messaging. The song is a party at times with the guitars, bass grooves, and percussion. The dueling vocals of Jackson and Powell, each bringing their own vocal tones and delivery, mesh well together. No one steps on the other. This a tight knit band that compliments each other often including throughout this song. They’re well deserving of a listen, not only this song but their previous albums and the upcoming one too.
