SWT is rolling out our announcement cannon for an exclusive premiere. A song from a Chicago-based, synth-led soul band.
From the press release for this new song: “Chicago’s funky 5-piece BAUGS, which began their spacey disco-soul voyage as the band Family of Geniuses wound down. Sharing a few of the same members, including vocalist and co-songwriter Rico Vigil, BAUGS started sharing their synth-led soul in late 2024, including releasing their debut album Limbo earlier this year.” When you’re done reading the premiere, check out their album Limbo here.
BAUGS’ current lineup includes several talented multi-instrumentalists, including Krista Evensen on vocals, synthesizer, and harp; Rico Vigil on vocals, synthesizer, and guitar; David Paha on synthesizer and guitar; Adam Wayne on bass guitar; and Kyle Gibson on drums.
Now that we’ve introduced the band a bit, let’s check out the press release that delves more into the single, elaborating that, “Sharing the A-side ‘Neon Sign’ off of their upcoming double-sided single, which shows the band’s funkier side along with their affinity for Prince. The single is the band’s summer song, featuring Vigil on vocals alongside co-writer Krista Evensen (also the band’s occasional harpist), and it began with their keyboardist David Paha building out the song’s textures when he was experimenting with modular synths.” Both sides A and B drop Friday, September 18th on all streaming platforms.
Tell me more about the inspiration for this single? Evensen noted, “Modular synths don’t use keyboards, just patch cables that connect a number of synths together to create morphing soundscapes. The act of patching these synths really look more like a laboratory experiment than a classic music studio setting. You just start making connections until a pattern emerges and speaks to you.”
