An SWT Exclusive Premiere: Kit Major –
“Not As Witty As I Used To Be”

Welcome back to SWT.

Today, we’re excited to share exclusive music from an artist poised to become a household name.ย We’re talking about the one and onlyย Kit Major.ย  The press release for the lead single that will officially be released tomorrow, the 13th (you’re getting it a day ahead of time!), “Not As Witty As I Used To Be” is the first single off her upcoming EP, which comes with a nice intro: “Kit Major is an impenetrable rock โ€˜n roll force from Los Angeles, blending the raw edge of punk with the grit of grunge. Known for razor-sharp hooks and chaotic, high-voltage live shows, Kit Major carved out a world thatโ€™s rebellious, messy, and undeniably fun.” She’s a self-proclaimed Dirty Misfit. And we at SWT dig that vibe. You probably do as well. You’re in the right place.

Kit’s upcoming release, theย Miss Egoย EP, is out June 12th via the Futureless label and will be her third release after her debut, 2022’sย Vampire Saturdayย EP, and 2024’sย Love.Sick.Major EP.ย  I absolutely love each of the six tracks on the Miss Ego EP, and I know you will too once you hear them. Be sure to keep visiting SWT for more Kit Major coverage, as there will be more!

But first, stay right here and read this brief Q&A to get to know Kit Major more.

What feels important for new listeners of Kit Major to know about you?

Iโ€™m in this for the love of music and the scene. Iโ€™m chasing that same sense of freedom thatโ€™s always been given to men in rock: the space to be loud, messy, dramatic, and fully yourself. I want people to feel accepted in loving their individuality and taking up space the same way. Thatโ€™s how I try to live mine.

Your sound is described as a blend of alt-pop and grunge-punk, and you have listed genre-pushing artists like Iggy Pop, Viagra Boys, and Amyl & The Sniffers as inspirations. What elements of their artistry do you draw from on Miss Ego?

I think you said it, โ€œgenre-pushing.โ€ Iโ€™m drawn to artists who are unapologetically themselves. Iโ€™m really careful not to curate my sound or image around what I think it should be. It has to feel true to who I am. I wrote the songs off Miss Ego, wearing my personality on my sleeve.

The video for “Not As Witty As I Used To Be” marks your directorial debut. What was the experience like for you, and how did it shape the final outcome?

It was an emotional high dive. Iโ€™ve been the creative lead behind my previous videos, so this felt like a natural next step. Iโ€™m really proud of how it came together and grateful that my friends and band were all down to help bring the vision to life. I wanted to do my take on a classic white room rock โ€™n roll video. Theyโ€™re timeless to me. With it being my first time directing and editing, there were definitely learning curves. I had to rely more on instinct than experience, which I think gave the video that old-school, โ€œletโ€™s just do it for kicksโ€ energy.

I love the blistering ferocity of the song in general as a sucker for punk or early (70s) power pop. The thumping drums and quickly strummed guitars remind me of some of the best punk songs of years past. This is a nice spin on modern-day punk, I think. The lyrics are sharp, the vocals are crisp, and Kit’s songwriting wit is solid. The song is not only a great way to kick off an EP but also serves as a nice welcome to fandom and appreciation of Kit Major.

Like what you heard? Be sure to listen to the entire EP on the platform of your choice once it is released in June.
