Hello!
Welcome to scummywatertower.com, a mouthful of a new site that will be devoted to music coverage.
My name is Alex Theel. I’m not a long-time freelance writer, but rather have a background in business management with a sense of design and a way with words.
From day one, the narrative voices you’ll get acquainted with are from established music journalist Josh Miller and myself. I find Josh’s writing voice to be thorough but more positive than the average critic or journalist. I find his voice refreshing to read. I believe you’ll find the same. And I hope you find our writing voices complement each other well.
We’ll start with artist/band interviews, exclusive music, concert and album reviews, and sprinkle in music news. Over time we plan on expanding by gradually adding new voices, more contributors and writers as we grow. As the site evolves, we may diversify our content by adding other entertainment we both enjoy like tv, film and gaming.
I’m excited that Josh and I are finally making this idea come to fruition. I’ve known Josh for decades, and seeing his writing develop has been exciting to witness.
A mutual friend and I got Josh into a few other bands, but especially The Replacements back when my record collection was getting both too expensive and extensive for my living space at the time. I had to create a wood shelving unit to fit all the vinyl. I’ll always love listening to a record on a turntable through an old but quality stereo receiver.
scummywatertower.com? Odd site name, right? To me, the name emits memories of an unforgettable howl that the esteemed Paul Westerberg emits during versions of the Replacements song “Can’t Hardly Wait,” a recording that was supposed to be on their Tim (1985) album but was modified by the studio heads down to the “corporate” version that was actually published on the Pleased to Meet Me (1987) album. The “corporate” version is worth a listen but I’ll let you discover that link for yourself. In the years since, several versions have been released including my favorite below.
All credit to Warner Records and the Replacements.
The song is indeed about suicide, but please don’t take that to reflect the content or mood of the site. If you’re in suicidal crisis, or emotional distress, please call 1-800-273-TALK within the US 24/7 or visit findahelpline.com/i/iasp outside the US.
Though we both are fans of the Replacements or Mats as I usually refer to them, they will not be the sole or main focus of this site. On this site and on our YouTube page, for the Scummy Water Tower Sessions, you will discover new bands, artists and songs.
We will always strive try to rise above the tide. Hopefully you’ll enjoy our inclusive approach and perspectives. Call us by our full name, Scummy, Scummy Water, or swt.
All are seen, heard and welcomed here.
Thanks for reading,
Alex
