Singles Spotlight: Will Overman – “Landlocked Heart”

Hello reader,

How are you today?

Today, we’re excited to discuss another singer songwriter who is making some great music: Will Overman. Now based in Nashville, but born in Virginia, raised near the beach, Overman’s excellent songwriting showcases his upbringing and travels since. His debut  album, The Winemaker’s Daughter (2021) was self-released. And recently on September 26th, Overman released a second album, Stranger. The album’s press release stated, “The album is the most fully realized version of me.” Color us, intrigued.

Nearly a month ago, I first heard Overman’s music and immediately knew I’d have to spotlight at least one song of his with you via the Singles Spotlight series we have at SWT. I was luckily enough to be able to listen to the entire Stranger album and after a couple listens, the closing track of all songs, “Landlocked Heart” was my favorite song on the album. Truth be told, there’s not a bad song on the album, including the cover of “Read My Mind”, so I know that you’ll love the songs while you listen to them. But to me, “Landlocked Heart” stands head and shoulders above the rest of the songs and thus serves as a wonderful introduction to the talented Will Overman’s music.

Why? The percussion and guitar strumming soon followed by Overman’s incredible vocals deliver heart on your sleeve lyrics for adventurers, those restless road warriors. At various points in history there has been a call to arms, this wordsmith and poet of the people, Overman, has written a call of relatability for fellow at times weary travellers no matter where they roam. The song’s melody builds and builds beautifully until the crescendo at past the halfway point of the song that slows the composition and then the melody builds back up again, introducing multiple organs and some harmonies in a triumphant sound to your ears. Overman might just be the best singer songwriter that you haven’t delved into yet. After you do explore his songs, what’d you think?
