Singles Spotlight:
Ritt Momney – “GUNNA”

Hello reader,

How are you today?

At SWT, we’re excited to discuss another artist making great music: the Salt Lake City-based indie pop singer-songwriter Jack Rutter and his project, Ritt Momney. If the name seems familiar to you, you’re probably thinking of an out-of-touch, business, and retired politician with a similar name. Spoonerisms are alive and well with creatives in the music scene!

Ritt Momney is relatively new on the scene, forming as a band while Rutter was in high school and later becoming a solo project once his bandmates left to become LDS missionaries. The debut release, Young Adult EP (2017), was followed by the debut full-length albums Her and All of My Friends (2019) and Sunny Boy (2021). The latter two releases garnered him some attention.

Momney did gain some fame in 2020 for his cover of Corinne Bailey Rae’s 2006 hit, “Put Your Records On,” from her self-titled debut album. Rae’s version is a gorgeous earworm that’s racked up millions and millions of plays, including 68 million on the YouTube link above alone. And Momney’s cover is a low-fi bedroom-pop offering in different tunings and musicianship than Rae’s. The cover is completely his own. The YouTube video has over 15 million views, and his TikTok and Spotify have millions more streams.

After that success, Rutter was losing some passion for music. Via the press release for the lead single from his newest album, BASE, which comes out Friday, February 27th, he said, “I was starting to feel like I was making music because I had to. But then I realized, I didn’t have to do anything I didn’t want to. I believe in base creativity. Some kind of pure being. A solid foundation.”

While the last two albums were solo efforts, this new release has Rick West and Chris Peranich, two bandmates who comprise Ritt Momney, lending their talents and sees Rutter creating in a state of groundedness, having gotten married, purchased a home, discovered some new hobbies, and taken a new approach to music creation. All of this laid the foundation for a spectacular album.

In SWT’s opinion, after listening to the entire album, I believe that one of the best songs on BASE is the lead single “GUNNA.” I really dig the combination of all three musicians performing together. A trio may be a common setup in pop music, but not everyone does it well. Not only do the two guitarists and the drummer play well together, but their sound also meshes perfectly. Sprinkle in Rutter’s bedroom pop vocal delivery, which is lesser but not understated at times, and you’ve got a memorable and catchy song. The melody quiets and gets louder at the right times, allowing for musicianship to take a front seat and impress the listener. I think “GUNNA” is a great introduction to the album BASE and probably Ritt Momney in general.

Take a listen for yourself. The awesome video for the song, “GUNNA” from Ritt Momney’s YouTube channel:
