Harrison Lemke –
“The Song of the Summer”

This singles spotlight entry is the talented singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania: Harrison Lemke. He has been crafting music for a while and releasing it on Bandcamp for over a decade, even as he moved a few times. For Lemke’s more devotional music, look back at his earlier Bandcamp catalog. There’s plenty of solid EPs and albums to explore. For more secular music, look no further than more recent releases Forever Only Idaho (2021) and Lemke’s most recent release in September, the terrific The Autumn Tape. His current Bandcamp bio succinctly notes, “tape-hiss symphonies to God.”

Recently, Lemke reached out to us, noting being a huge Replacements fan and described the album as “It’s a small, homespun record about standing on the precipice of massive changes, in my life and in the world. It’s a mixture of lo-fi folk, jangle pop, ambient, and tape experimentation. Some reference points, or things that inspired me anyway, would be The Microphones, Felt, Yo La Tengo, and the weird home-recorded records the Beach Boys were making in the late 60s.” Sold. A few times over. Definitely within music that appeals to me. So I checked it out. Listened to it a few times repeatedly and knew that I’d have to share at least a couple of songs off of it with you. I enjoyed the tighter parts and the more experimental stream-of-consciousness moments and melodies on this album.

From the Bandcamp page for the album, Lemke peels back the onion, sharing more: “This music arose from a dream I had in British Columbia. I don’t remember the dream. It wasn’t autumn yet then, but my body, Texas-starved for rain and wind, dreamed it. I spent some time by the sea, on stretches of beach that have stood in for so many other beaches in film and television, and tried to remember the dream. I could only pull out a few phrases. They made about as much sense as music. Later on, at home, the dream ran under everything, and I made these recordings, quickly, intuitively, while the shape of my life was changing. I was thinking about jangle pop and K Records and the sound of wind, restless sounds that pull you along with them. That and the dream I couldn’t remember.”

Lemke continues, “All of this was produced and recorded at home by Harrison Lemke from (more or less) September 2024 to (more or less) September 2025, ‘home’ being, of course, a migratory concept in this day and age. Simplest just to say: recorded at various times in a room in Austin, TX, and a room in Pittsburgh, PA. All parts were played and sung by Harrison except for background vocals on “The Song of the Summer” by Magdalene Lemke.”
Now that we’ve introduced Harrison, delved a bit into his bio and discography, and his most recent album, let’s take a closer look at one of the songs on it. It was difficult for me to decide which to shed more spotlight on. I felt there were a few strong contenders. But one song that stood out above the rest was “The Song of the Summer”. Perhaps a bit tongue-in-cheek, given that it is fall or autumn now, depending on your word of choice, and thus summer is long over by this point. One doesn’t need to feel at their sassiest or most witty whilst listening, though. The song kicks off quickly into the melody at a rapid pace. 0 to 60 in 2 seconds. It’s a lovely jaunt into adventure. I feel like this melody and its lyrics would pair perfectly with a video starting with a cityscape shot of someone almost running along the sidewalk, maybe a briefcase or suitcase in hand, with speed as if trying to catch something in the distance. Maybe a vehicle, maybe a place, as time evades them. Maybe see shots of the sun in the sky, and the leaves beginning to change colors as fall is upon us. Kudos to Harrison’s great musicianship on drums, guitar, and other instruments, which are well played and have a bit of jangle to them in the best ways. These instruments are paired with his sweet, memorable vocal delivery and his wife Magdalene’s. Her backing vocals pair well with his and add more depth and life to the melody. The song has a lot of energy up front, but her tone fits the theme well. I hope she’s a part of future songs. All that to say, this song and artist deserve more attention via our Singles Spotlight series.

But don’t just take my word for it; press play and listen for yourself. And tell us what you think:
