Hello reader,
How are you today? Happy Canada Day, if you’re reading this on the right day.
I’m excited to discuss another Canadian group that has been making some great music for a decade: Among Legends. They’re an Ontario-based punk trio formed in 2016, with several independent EPs, a few lineup changes, and many shows across Canada and the US. In 2022, they released their debut full-length album, Take Good Care via Little Rocket Records (UK/Japan), Rad Girlfriend Records (USA), and Sounds of Subterrania (EU). The press release for the band’s second album, Lose My Grip, which is out July 10th via Little Rocket Records (UK/EU/Japan), ADD Records and Sell The Heart Records (USA), and Steady Riot Records (Canada) reflected upon both the past and present reflectively, “Recorded after years of upheaval and transition within the band, the album reflects a period where everything seemed to shift at once. The release of their debut full-length, Take Good Care, was delayed by the pandemic, lineup changes forced the band to rebuild itself from the ground up, and years spent on the road sharpened both their sound and perspective. The result is a record that feels less concerned with fitting neatly into one scene or subgenre and more focused on clarity, momentum, and connection. You can hear that evolution in the spaces between the songs as much as the songs themselves. The long overnight drives on the 401. Loading gear into tiny clubs after midnight. The fluorescent buzz of a Tim Hortons stop before another stretch of highway.” Be sure to check that 2022 release, Take Good Care out after you finish this Spotlight. It’s a good dose of melodic, modern pop punk in the best ways.

The band’s current lineup features long-time members Mitchell Buchanan on bass and vocals, Sara Fellin on drums and vocals, and Tyler Boles on guitar. As their bio states, “Among Legends are ready to take Lose My Grip on the road, playing as many dive bars, basements, DIY spaces, concert halls and backyards as possible through 2026 and beyond.” Right on. I’m looking forward to seeing a long list of tour dates and hearing about the band’s shows.
The new album was produced, engineered, mixed, and mastered by Matt Gauthier at This Place Needs A Name.

In SWT’s opinion, one of the best songs on Lose My Grip is “Floating Here For Years.” After I heard it for the first time, I was hooked and knew I had to reserve a date on the SWT calendar for its own Singles Spotlight. The song’s pace is blistering in the best ways, in what you love about punk and modern punk as well. The melody is catchy and energetic. The band shows off their tight-knit musicianship on this track with great flow, fills, solos, and by weaving all the instrumentation together with vocals. I enjoyed the lead vocals as well as the harmonies. Therefore, I think this song deserves not only a Singles Spotlight on SWT but also a great introduction to the band Among Legends. Listen for yourself and let us know what you think.
