Singles Spotlight:
Wild Blessing –
“Glossolaila”

Hello reader,

How are you today?

Today, we’re excited to introduce you to another artist who is beginning to make some great music, Washington D.C.’s Wild Blessing. On Friday, June 5th, they’ll release their debut, From Dust EP. The band has already released two singles, the first being “Michael Who Walks By Night” which is a modern take on the song originally recorded in the mid-80s by Glaswegian band Strawberry Switchblade.

What comes to mind when you hear the term ‘glossolalia’? Word Nerds, this definition is an easy one for you. For the rest of us, what comes to mind? Do you recall any film scenes that you’ve seen, or other media, or any first-hand experiences? Maybe you think of a Southern US church, or a Pentecostal sermon? Here’s the official Merriam-Webster Dictionary definition: “profuse and often emotionally charged speech that mimics coherent speech but is usually unintelligible to the listener and that is uttered in some states of religious ecstasy and in some schizophrenic states.”

From the EP’s press release, Wild Blessing notes, “I came across the word glossolalia recently and fell in love with the phonetics of it before I knew what it meant. It felt like a good way to explore an intuition I sometimes have that communication is often less about words and their meaning than trying to make contact. The song is also about all the people who live on the margins of society, that few people take the time to listen to.”

In SWT’s opinion, one of the best songs on the From Dust EP is “Glossolaila.” That’s the single that we’re going to spotlight today. We’re so stoked to share it with you. It’s a vibe of a song whose melody, especially the percussion, jaunts and covers ground in a lovely manner from its opening beats until the final note. It’s the kind of song that not only would sound great while driving, but also while you’re sitting at home on your couch or chair, relaxing. It fills the environment in which it is deployed. The lyrics are apropos relative to the title and also communication in general.  Kudos. The song features Beauty Pill’s Chad Clark, Tara Pasveer, and Carmen Elisa Vargas of the Venezuelan Symphony Orchestra, and I feel it is a great starting point on your Wild Blessing discovery. Check out the range the band puts on display when you listen to “Michael Who Walks By Night” next.
