Singles Spotlight:
Julez and the Rollerz –
“I Don’t Know You”

Hello reader,

How are you today?

I’m excited to discuss another quartet that continues to create great music: Julez and the Rollerz. The LA-based band formed in 2021 by Jules Batterman (lead vocals, guitar) has featured the following musicians as ‘Rollerz’ for the past few years: Shea Carothers (synth, vocals), Morgyn Payge (bass, vocals), and Sarah Park ‘Spark’ (drums). This lineup’s debut EP, Is This Where The Party Is? (2023), garnered the group some acclaim and awareness outside the LA scene, where they had made a name for their incredible live shows, including both local ones and festivals.

Their band bio sheds more light on their sound and playing style, saying, “After spending years cultivating a distinctively glittering fusion of glam-rock swagger, 70s-inspired riffs, and pure, unapologetic girl power, Julez and the Rollerz are turning their passions into anthems for a new generation of rock lovers. The[y] ha[ve] created a sound that marries the intensity of stadium rock with the intimacy of a tight-knit sisterhood.”  Hell yeah. Impossible to go wrong with glam-rock, swagger, 70’s riffs, and girl power and sisterhood in anthemic songs. I’m excited to hear more, are you?

Recently, a lead single entitled “I Don’t Know You” was announced for their upcoming full-length debut album, Dirty Little Rock ‘N’ Roller, which is out June 26th via Lolipop Records. The album was produced, engineered, and mixed by Grammy-nominated producer Alex Newport (Death Cab for Cutie, Bloc Party, The Mars Volta) at Tiny Creatures Studio in Yucca Valley, CA.

Via the single’s press release, vocalist/guitarist Jules Batterman said, “Turning 30 made me confront the fact that I’ve outgrown parts of myself. “I Don’t Know You” started as a song about looking back at my younger self and thinking, ‘Who is she?’ But it naturally became more than just ‘that’. It’s also about how time reshapes EVERYTHING. Sometimes you lose significant people in your life; whether it be friends, past lovers, family members…. Sometimes you lose who you once were. We are forever changing, as are the people around us, and while scary, it’s also beautiful to think about. I’m now 31, married, still unsure of what I want out of life, and I’m hoping my past self is still proud of the path I’m on now.”

After listening to “I Don’t Know You” and being hooked by its solo vocals, melodies, and earworm chorus, I knew it had to shed some spotlight on it via SWT’s Singles Spotlight series. It’s a fantastic song, and to me it serves as a great introduction to Julez and the Rollerz as a band, as well as to their new album coming out in June. The sisterhood is tight-knit, reflected not only in the lyrics but also in how each of the talented musicians plays off the others. We’ll advocate for that every day.
