Hello reader,
How are you?
Today, we’re excited to introduce the musical talent of an artist known for her visual design and artwork, who has recently started releasing music, Hirons. While we’re still learning about her ourselves, Hirons is the project of now LA-based artist Jenny Hirons. According to her site, she “was born in Damascus and educated in London.” Picking up influences from all over, no doubt.
What’s her musical style? We may find out a portion of it during the single you listen to. But first, let’s take a look at a few musical influences that Hirons cites: accordionist Astor Piazzolla, the Beach Boys, Elliot Smith, Deerhoof, and Rachmaninoff. I know most of our readers are familiar with four of those artists. Props if you’ve ever vibed out to Tango legend Astor Piazzolla. I know I have to listen to more of his work myself. I hear the word accordion, and my brain goes to a man of a different tempo, “America’s Polka King” Frankie Yankovic. Discovering new artists is part of what makes music great. After you’re done with this spotlight, please go and listen to music created by Hiron’s influences if you’re unfamiliar.
Coming out Friday, November 7th, via the fantastic indie label Western Vinyl is Hiron’s debut release, the Future Perfect EP. Via the EP’s press release, it is, “The product of several years of tinkering, Future Perfect is also a breakup EP, an unemployment EP, an uncertain future EP. Having now made it out into the world, Hirons looks back to a time when ‘music was the economy of our hearts’, and forward to a future allowed to shape itself however it may be, ‘carried home in all directions.'” Art and creative expression are many feelings and come in various forms, not just as vehicles for catharsis or community or shared human experience. This makes up well… a few reasons why we love to share new music with you on SWT.
I was fortunate enough to hear the first single from the EP, “Being The Cause,” over a month ago, and it immediately caught my attention. Later on, I was able to listen to the entire EP, and in my opinion, it still holds up as the best song on the Future Perfect EP, from the opening synth tones to the plucked bass notes that complement and measure time perfectly. Hirons’ wonderfully toned vocals deliver lyrics of a mundane, mind-numbing existence while co-existing with a relatively upbeat experimental pop melody. But not sugary sweet. And while the mind may be numb, one still possesses critical thinking. For some ears, this balance of melody and lyrics may contrast; for others, a sweet spot that tickles your brain…a sound enjoyed while listening to a truckload of pop songs over the years. I know there are a few that will come to your mind while you listen for yourself.
The chorus adds depth in creating the setting and scene. “Hope for the pleasure of being the cause” is a line repeated in the chorus twice. For many listeners, the song may feel like a bygone era in the best ways. While still being Hirons’ own. It’s why I think “Being The Cause” serves as not only a great intro to Hirons’ music but also why it deserves attention within today’s Singles Spotlight on SWT.
