Singles Spotlight: Frances Whitney – “Biggest Fan”

Hello reader,

How are you today?

Today, we’re excited to introduce another artist who is making some great music: Frances Whitney. Whitney was raised in San Francisco and has spent a good amount of time traveling! She went to the East Coast for college in Connecticut, and also spent time in Greece, Toronto, Nashville, NYC, and now LA. All the while, Whitney was writing songs starting at the age of 6, but never sharing her music widely as she felt imposter syndrome. In the press release, Whitney stated, “What’s always been most powerful is hearing someone share something that’s really vulnerable and having this experience of, oh, I’m actually not the only one who’s felt that way. So, the inherent goal in being so confessional and honest is for others to feel seen and heard.”

It was only after college, while playing professional volleyball in Greece, that Whitney gained more confidence in writing and sharing her songs with others. As the press release states, her songwriting is “the one thing that makes me feel whole, fulfilled, excited, and good about my life.”

Last November, the LA-based Singer-Songwriter released her debut EP, Old Hobbies, via the lovely label, 604 Records. The EP featured eight tracks of acoustic, lyric-forward songs that, after one listen, are sure to become your favorite songs of the day, and perhaps your favorite EP of 2024.

On March 7th of this year, Frances Whitney followed that up with the release of the deluxe version of Old Hobbies, titled Old Hobbies (Revisited), which was also released via 604 Records. The deluxe version features three additional songs, for a total of 11 songs.

In SWT’s opinion, one of the best songs on Old Hobbies (Revisited) is “Biggest Fan.” That’s the single that we’re going to spotlight today. We’re so stoked to share it with you. It’s a powerful song that serves as the album opener, with sorrowful lyrics that seek redemption and gratification on top of a melody of beautiful strings and triumphant moments.

Via the song’s video press release, Whitney says, “This song crushed me the first time I heard it. It’s so honest about a specific kind of hollow, self-erasing love. We wanted the video to capture that experience of building up a love for someone at the expense of your own identity, constructing a fantasy and then having to live in reality.”
