Singles Spotlight:
2070 – “Transducer”

Hello reader,

How are you today?

Today, we’re excited to discuss another great experimental band, 2070. The LA-based indie band has established a name for itself in the LA scene as one of the city’s hardworking DIY bands since the Pandemic. Their music output has defied staying within one traditional genre, so I think ‘experimental’ is the best initial description for the band to a new listener. But one must listen for themselves and let me know what you think. In 2022, the band released their debut album, Shordy, followed by Stay In The Ranch in 2024. Both are listening to, though right now sonically, I like the latter more.

From the lead singles off their upcoming album’s press release, “2070 is a 4-piece rock band based in Los Angeles. Started in 2015 by lead vocalist and guitarist Trevor Coleman in his home state of Michigan, the band moved to Los Angeles and quickly found resonance in the LA DIY music scene. Currently composed of Coleman, guitarist Khari Cousins, drummer Rogers DeCoud, and bassist Danny Rincon, the band has found a unique way to blend genres, experimenting with traditional shoegaze sounds to more abrasive guitar rock. Each member’s individual sonic and artistic contributions allow 2070 to be this special act – one that changes every time they perform, from the classic 4-piece rock performance to, at times, a smaller ambient synth project. Their textured recordings are borderless and tenacious, all at once; think Dinosaur Jr. meets My Bloody Valentine. Organically finding room in the current LA scene, 2070 has played across several staple LA venues, with former bandmate Tchad Cousins (urika’s bedroom) as the bassist in the band, and with members in other projects such as Castle Pasture, Harmony Index, and more. 2070 emulates true guitar music and being a true rock band.” As a big fan of both Dinosaur Jr. and MBV, and as someone who has floated in and out of both shoegaze and ambient fandoms the past couple of decades, consider me intrigued.

In the same press release, bandleader Trevor Coleman elaborated on the lead single, “Transducer,” saying, “I recorded this track at Danny’s house while I was checking on his dog over the holidays. Danny has a great, state-of-the-art home studio and plenty of interesting gear,” bandleader Trevor Coleman recalls. “So, I took that as an opportunity to record a song that had been sitting in my voice memos for a couple of months. I couldn’t remember the actual guitar I was playing on the demo, so I added keyboards to replicate the fingerpicking parts and used Danny’s Death by Audio vocal delay pedal to record the vocals and the guitar solos. I made the drums in his Ableton and played all the guitar parts myself on his Jag-Stang guitar with his dog River as my witness.”

“Transducer” is the first single from their upcoming album, Big Blue, scheduled for release on February 6th via the fabulous artist-run indie record label, Danger Collective Records. I gave the single one listen and immediately knew that we at SWT had to not only provide the band with some spotlight via our Singles Spotlight Series, but also the song itself. From the opening drum loop to the shimmering guitars, this song exemplified tight musicianship and sonic production. The vocals were delivered in an almost ethereal manner, reminiscent of a church choir. All beautifully done. Then came a guitar solo. Slayed it. You’ll groove to the sweet-sounding melody in no time. The song is less than 3 minutes long and will serve as the first course in your desire for more 2070, listener.
